Kindergarten, Vocational College with Multipurpose Hall
Wada Minoru is a pioneer of early childhood education in Japan. To commemorate his 100th birthday, the school planned to consolidate aging facilities. We planned and designed the new building for their kindergarten, vocational college (the training school for nursery teachers), and the multipurpose hall in the stratified form on a narrow site. We first focused on this characteristic location which was facing the JR Mejiro Station and the Yamate-line railway. After long observation and simulations, we decided to emphasize the main building facade by using the symbolic metal screen. This screen functions as a thermal insulation screen, as a blindfold screen, and also as a symbolic art installation.
